Log-hub at KIT: Connecting Optimization Theory with Real-World Practice 

Earlier this week, Log-hub had the opportunity to contribute to the “Taktisches und operatives Supply Chain Management” course at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), led by Prof. Dr. Stefan Nickel. As part of the session, Chief Data Analytics Officer Sandro Braendle, together with colleagues Jonas Sigmund and Daniel Schade, gave students a practical look into how supply chain optimization is handled in real-world projects. 

The team focused on how theoretical models can be translated into real-world challenges using Log-hub’s Supply Chain Apps. Topics included data preparation, model configuration, and the trade-offs often faced when balancing optimization accuracy with resource investment. The session emphasized that algorithms alone are not enough: successful optimization relies on clean data, a deep understanding of business processes, and the people who interpret and act on the results. 

“Our visit to KIT was by far one of the best parts of this week,” said Sandro Braendle. “We talked with students about how theory meets real-life use cases and shared how we apply these principles in our projects using our Supply Chain Apps. A key point was that optimization isn’t just about algorithms, it requires understanding the business context, developing a solid grasp of data acquisition processes, and properly preprocessing data. And while the theory behind optimization is essential, its real value emerges when paired with the right data, tools, and understanding of the background context.” 

In addition to sharing frameworks and methods used in industry, the team walked students through the backend logic of the apps and how optimization models are operationalized within organizations. The session also covered common challenges, such as data limitations and implementation constraints, and how to approach them pragmatically. 

The student group showed strong engagement and interest throughout the session, bridging academic knowledge with practical perspectives from the field. 

Beyond the lecture, the visit also served as a chance for the team to connect in person through workshops, internal discussions, and a team dinner, rounding off a productive and enjoyable two-day experience. 

This presentation at KIT is part of Log-hub’s broader effort to help shape the next generation of supply chain professionals. In addition to guest lectures and workshops, the company also runs an Academic Program that enables students and universities to work hands-on with its Supply Chain Apps and apply theory directly to real-world scenarios.
